Venezuela round trip 2002
Canaima
The lagoon of Canaima is located in the middle of the Canaima national park in the south east of Venezuela.
The size if the park is bigger than Belgium and only the Pemon Indians are allowed to settle inside.
In Canaima, the Rio Carraro is flowing over several waterfalls into the lagoon. In the past the Indians used to avoid the lagoon since they believed that it is the home of evil.
Only when some adventures found the lagoon and it started to attract tourists, the Indians moved into this area.
Canaima surrounded by tabletop mountains.
The El Sapo - the frog - waterfall is caved and allows crossing it by walking behind the falling water.
Crossing the Gran Sabana
There are countless creeks and waterfalls in the Gran Sabana. Many of the cascades created small pools that invite to swim.
The Gran Sabana is on top of the Guyana shield. The layers of sandstone eroded and the tabletop mountains are to only remainders.
The Quebrada de Jaspe waterfall consists of jasper and is glowing red in the sunshine.
During the wet season everything is green but the trees concentrate near the creeks where they can get water all year long.
Following Humboldt's footsteps
entrance of the Cueva del Guacharo
During his travels in South America, Alexander von Humboldt visted the Cueva del Guacharo
The Guacharo are nocturnal birds that use special sounds to orientate.
At the Orinoco
Cashews are the stone of the fruit of the Caju tree. Each of the fruits that are used for making juice has only one stone on the outside. Before the stones are eatable they need to be roasted to neutralize the dangerous oil.
The Orinoco delta offers a lot of untouched space for the various animals living there.
The Orinoco - the father of all rivers - is not only one of the largest rivers in South America, it is also connected to the Amazon with the Casiquiare.
Piranhas are not as dangerous as their reputation. Only if many of them are crowed in a place they become dangerous.
